It is necessary to study the equilibrium compositions and volume expansion in order to find optimum process conditions (temperature and pressure) for the gas antisolvent (GAS) process. Inthis work the volume expansion and process conditions for the ternary system (DMSO, CO2, and ampicillin) were determined. The Peng Robinson equation of state with linear combination of Vidal and Michelsen mixing rules (PR-LCVM) was used to describe the fluid phases. The bestcombination of the solvent and antisolvent is when the minimum in the volume expansion occursat lower pressure. The minimum pressures for ternary system at 308, 313 and 319 K is 7.3, 8, 8.97 MPa, respectively. The operation pressure in our GAS experiments must be above 7.3, 8 and 8.97 MPa at 308, 313 and 319 K, respectively. At this operation pressure, a high supersaturationcondition of solute is expected for successful recrystallization and micronization of ampicillin particles.
