Due to hydration heat generation, the newly placed massive concrete structures are plausible to be exposed to severe thermal gradients as they solidify. These detrimentaldifferential volume changes are the main cause for development of thermal cracks. The strain-based criteria accompanied by thermo-elastic stress investigations shallimpose proper proportioning among the factors affecting thermal gradients in order to avoid associated cracks
