چکیده:

The talk will present novel results relating to the reduction of flammability of EPDM composites by adding synthesized halloysite nanotubes to EPDM matrix. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are a kind of aluminosilicate clays mined from natural deposits in countries such as New Zealand, America, Brazil and so on. Iran lacks these resources, but is rich in natural minerals like kaolin clays. It has good flame retardation and can be used instead of flame retardants. In this study the effect of synthesized HNTs in reduction of flammability of ethylene propylene diene monomer composites instead of using decabromodiphenyl oxide and antimony trioxide as flame retardants (FRs) which produce toxic and stable gas molecules after combustion were studied. The results revealed that homogenuous dispersion of HNTs inside the EPDM, tubular structure of HNTs and the inter-tubular interactions between HNTs and EPDM were the main reasons for the reduction of flammability and improvement of thermal properties of EPDM compounds
