This study has been carried out to investigate the effects of Sb addition (0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 wt.%) on the microstructure and tensile properties of Al-15%Mg2Si in-situ metal matrix composite. Microstructural examination was carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the presence of 0.3 wt.% Sb reduces the size of primary Mg2Si particles from 65 μm to 20 μm. Further results showed that adding Sb to the composite changes the morphology of primary Mg2Si from irregular containing hollows to more compact particles with semi-cubic morphology. In addition, Sb addition changes the morphology of eutectic Mg2Si phase. The results obtained from tensile testing showed enhanced UTS and elongation values of the cast composite. This improvement is related to the 68% reduction in the size of primary Mg2Si phase.
