In this study, an unknown time wise varying strength of a plane heat source located within a specified position of an infinite plate is estimated by utilizing an inverse heat transfer method. The Conjugate Gradient Method (CGM) with adjoint problem for function estimation applied in this study is a powerful and straightforward iterative technique for solving linear and nonlinear inverse problems. The present method converges very rapidly and is not so sensitive to the measurement errors. It is assumed that no priori information is available on the variation of the strength of theunknown source with time. The accuracy of the analysis is validated with both exact an inexact simulated transient temperature measurements. The results obtained by using both sets of simulated measurements are compared. The response of the current inverse method to increasing in measurement errors is also investigated. In fact, quite accurate estimates are obtained with errorless measurements, as well as with measurements containing random errors.
