چکیده:

Phenol is found extensively in the effluents of refinery, coke plant, electroplating industries and is extremely dangerous to enviroment. Preparation of activated carbon from low cost material,specially sewage sludge is a promissing method to produce useful adsorbent for such pollutants removal. The objective of this study was to sythesize activataded carbon from paper mill sludgeand invistigation on its adsorption performance for phenol removal from aqeous phase. Theactivated carbon was prepared from paper mill sludge impregnated with 1.2 M zinc choloride and then pyrolyzed at 700˚C for 1h under nitrogen atmosphere. Furthuremore, its adsorption capacityfor phenol adsorption from aqueous solution, in constant temperature (25˚C), and at initial concentration range of 10-60 mg/l was determined. The results indicated that the activated carbonmade from sewage sludge had a notable adsorption capacity for phenol. In this case, the experimental data showed a good fit with Freundlich model, indicating a multilayer adsorption onto activared carbon prepared from paper mill sludge using ZnCl2 as an activating agent
