The possibility of dam heightening is the first question that could be asked by the clients after safety assessment of an old dam especially when remarkableaugmentation of reservoir volume is obtainable by limited heightening of dam and reasonable costs.Having a sense of good achievement in dam heightening projects requires consideringand reviewing all available documents such as reports, drawings and calculations.Moreover, precise visiting of all structures in order to assess the aging and environmental effects, and preparing cores of concrete and rock foundation toexamine their mechanical behavior are essential activities in preliminary studies of dam upgrading process. This paper presents the considerations and efforts have been done for spillway rehabilitation in heightening of a 40-year-old Dam in northwest of IRAN, known as Zarineh-Roud Dam. The main purposes of dam heightening in Zarineh-Roud Dam project were preparing of drinking water needs of Tabriz city and irrigating of extending agricultural fields. In order to reach these goals heightening of 2.5m of dam body, changing of hydraulic shape of spillway, and using of 10 radial gates over spillway were necessary. Theachieved goals of this project were extension of 19,779 hectares of irrigation network and increase of 38Mm3 (million cubic meter) to drinking water storage of reservoirvolume by using the best available alternative of civil work operations which reducedthe destruction time to minimum 7 months and total cost reduction of $695,000 in civil remedial work.
