In recent years soft computing techniques have been used increasingly by water resources engineers to model complex water resources systems. These techniqueshave the ability to mimic the human way of reasoning and decision making, and thus supplement the conventional modelling techniques. The present paper presentsArtificial Neural Network models for flood and water quality prediction of the Hirakud Reservoir on the River Mahanadi, in India, with the objectives of efficientflood control, water quality, irrigation and power generation. The Artificial Neural Network models are used to capture the historical pattern of flood and water quality.The model developed is used to predict the flood and water quality ahead of theirentry into the reservoir. The performance of the models are found to be satisfactory and can be used for reservoir management.
