One of the greatest demands in 21st century is diminishing or even elimination of fossil fuels as primary energy sources on their non-renewability, environment contamination, transport cost, low efficiency in energy production. Technological advancements have developed many alternative ways to renewable energy production. The rapid evolution of nanosciences and nanotechnologies during the past two decades has demonstrated that this recent aspect of science holds the key for many of technological advancements in the sustainable energy extent including production, storage and usage. In this article, the methods of efficient energy storage are discussed with attention to nanotechnologically improvement sights. Nanostructured materials are used for hydrogen storage and electrochemical energy storage. Nowadays the variety of nanomaterials such as nanostructured carbon, zeolites, nanocomposites, metal and chemical hydrides, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), micro porous polymers and clathrates have been offered to hydrogen storage which their advantages and disadvantages have been compared in this article. In the same tension, we have studied the extension of nanomaterially improvements which are discussed in supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries in details.
