This study evaluates the application of methods developed in the decision Support Systems; Spatial Multiple Criteria Decision Making using weighted linear combination, ordered weighted averages, implemented within the Geographical Information System, to obtain a new method for development of Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants. The aim is presenting alternate methods where extensive field data are not available and the conventional method has certain limitations, is not cost and time effective. The Zayanderud pumped storage hydropower plant is investigated as a case study. It is located in central Iran and uses the existing Zayanderud dam lake as the lower reservoir. Results of this research indicate using a compensatory multiple criteria decision making model, right and left banks of Zayanderud dam location are suitable for site allocation. Using a moderately non-compensatory model, the areas considered suitable for Hydropower Plants construction are limited in right bank of dam. Varying the relative weights of the different factors do not affect suitability estimates to a large degree, but variations in model structure have moreeffect on our suitability maps.
