High energy (10 MeV) electron beam from Rhodotron accelerator system was used to study the potential of using ionizing radiation for treatment of wastewater pollutants. Samples from different steps of Yazd wastewater treatment plant were collected and irradiated in the electron beam accelerator in a batch system with irradiation doses of 1, 1.5, 3, 6, and 9 kGy. Concentration of heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in wastewaters were measured. Pre-concentration and removal of these metals after irradiation were studied. By adding some chemical agents such as EDTA and NaCH3COO, the effects of these chemical agents on pre-concentration of heavy metals before and after irradiation were investigated. Also, experiments were performed by combination of adding micro-rice bran in samples and electron beam irradiation to study enhancement on pre-concentration of the metals in samples. Results show high efficiency of pre-concentration and removal of the metal ions in the samples using this technique.
