In this paper, we analyze the degradation imposed on the primary service outage probability by the cognitive service as a secondary user with non-ideal spectrum sensing. For differentspectrum access strategies including overlay, underlay and modified underlay, we then derive closed form for the outage degradationin the presence of spectrum sensing errors. For a given acceptable level of outage degradation in the primary network, we then obtaina lower bound on the achievable throughput of the cognitive service. The simulations confirm our analysis and show that the modifiedunderlay spectrum access for the cognitive service considerably increases its throughput, particularly in the case where the activity of the primary service is higher than 50%.
