Poly (lactic acid) / poly (vinyl alcohol) microspheres were synthesized. The drug release rate and the initial burst effect showed that PLA microspheres had suitable controlled release kinetics for drug delivery. The rate of drug release and initial burst effect was regulated by incorporation of PVA hydrogel network prepared by different methods such as gamma irradiation and freeze-thawing. The presence of surrounding poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogels decreased the burst release of the drug. The biocompatibility of PLA makes it as potential drug delivery system in vivo applications.
