Recent studies on identification of photovoltaic system parameters based on the data available inthe device datasheet lacks accurate results, mainly due to the searching methods which were used, as well assimplifying assumptions which were made. This shortcoming is mainly a result of the non-linear I-Vcharacteristic of these devices. In this paper, a novel technique is presented to estimate the key parametersof the photovoltaic arrays. While these key parameters are not reported in the device datasheet, they arestrongly needed in accurate modeling of photovoltaic systems. The proposed method is based on a geneticalgorithm which adopts the available datasheet values to identify the unknown parameters of system. Dataobtained from the simulation tests which are performed by MATLAB, investigates effectiveness of theproposed method. Analyses show that the proposed method is profitable to identify accurate values of theunknown parameters over little computation time. The P-V and I-V curves of the device are then extractedusing both the available and the adjusted parameters of the photovoltaic array. Comparisons show that theextracted curves are in accordance with the data reported both in the literature and the device datasheet.
