In this investigation a rectangular composite laminate with simple boundaries is optimized for total thickness subject to strength and stability constraints under multiple in-plane load conditions. Layer thicknesses, orientation angles, stacking order, and ultimately the total number of the layers required are the main variables in the optimization problem. Method of center points based on inscribed hyper-spheres in the design space is the algorithm used in the angle domain optimization. Maximum strain criterion of failure is considered for strength, and the stability analyses are performed using energy method. Example is taken from the literature and superior results are found pointing out to the significance of the stacking order optimality. The method proposed exhibits high efficiency for such design optimizations involving Eigen-value analyses.
