In recent years, due to the consecutive load growth and some technical restrictions for developing power networks such as social and economical constraints, it has necessitated to efficiently run power system in maximum capacity. Power transmission network is considered as a main framework for competition in environment of deregulated and restructured power systems. But its deficiency could undesirably consider as a restricting factor for competition. Enhancing power transfer limit (PTL) could result in the increase of security margin and competition. For this purpose, utilizing the installed capacity of power transmission network in maximum efficiency is essentially required. In this paper, an approach based on finding the most appropriate place for installing PST and setting its controlling parameters regarding improvement of PTL is proposed. The main aim of this work is to improve power transfer limit by phase shifting transformer (PST) without any change in existing network topology and loadgeneration pattern. For this purpose, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized to determine the optimal location, number and setting of PST aimed at improving power transfer limit. The proposed approach has been implemented in IEEE 39- bus test system with promising results showing its effectiveness and applicability.
