Since the agro-environmental pollution and health hazards are created by non-judicious use of herbicides so, in the present research the controlled release of some herbicide such as paraquat (as the anionic herbicide) was studied. For this purpose, a polymeric hydrogel was initially prepared by the graft copolymerization of cross-linked neutralized poly(acrylic acid) chains onto wheat straw and then, it was converted to a nanocomposite by applying different wt.% of organo modified montmorillonite (Cloisite® ۱۵A). The prepared hydrogels showed enormous swelling in aqueous medium and displayed swelling characteristics which were highly dependent on the chemical composition of the hydrogel, pH and ionic strength of the medium. The nanocomposite hydrogels was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV- Spectrophotometer. The amount of released herbicide was decreased around 27 % after 8 h when the nanocomposite structure was applied.
