Nickel coatings were electrodeposited on carbon steel in a Watts-type bath, using direct current. To compare the effects of additives, dodecyl and saccharin were added to the bath. Coatings were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope, X-Ray Diffraction and Atomic Force Microscopy. Micro hardness was also measured. Results showed that in all cases, the texture of coatings was {200}. Semi-spherical morphology was observed in the presence and absence of dodecyl. Conversely, saccharin led to a smooth surface. Values of Ra and Rms showed that both additives reduce the roughness of the coatings. The roughness of the coatings produced in the presence of saccharin was the lowest. Hardness measurements showed that coatings produced in the bath with saccharin have the highest micro hardness,. Calculating the grain size of the coatings showed that all the deposits have nano-crystalline structures
