In the present study, the effect of pro-oxidant on the photo-oxidative degradation of LDPE films were investigated. Cobalt stearate and combination of metallic /nonmetallic photo-initiators, i.e. a mixture of cobalt stearate along with diphenyl carbonate and its nitro derivative, were added to LDPE as pro-oxidants. LDPE films were prepared by film blowing technique in the presence / absence of photosensitive additives. Then they were exposed to UV radiation for extended time periods. The chemical and physical changes induced by this exposure were followed by monitoring the changes in mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break), carbonyl index and MFI.
