چکیده:

Porous NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) with interconnected pores is fabricated using a mechanically activated self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (MASHS) technique. A mixture of Nickel and Titanium powders is mechanically activated by a ball milling process to improve the reactivity of the elemental powders. The effect of the ball milling parameters such as milling cycles and lubrication on the quality and the amount of the powder yield obtained from milling, the reactions during synthesis, and the composition of the final product are studied. The mixture is pressed to form a cylindrical green pellet, and an experimental setup is employed for igniting the pellet by electrical current. The product is mainly composed of B2 and B19′ phases of NiTi that are the most desired phases. The product porosity is in the range of that of human bone, and mostly consists of open pores, which are very beneficial for bone ingrowth in orthopedic applications
