Wavelet Transform has shown to be very effective in Medical signal and image processing applications such as compression, noise reduction and detection. In wavelet based image coding the choice of wavelet filters is crucial and determines the coding performance. In this paper we investigate effect of applying different types of wavelet filters belonging to orthogonal and biorthogonal families. The best filter for compression of medical images regarding to linearity of phase response, cancellation of aliasing effect and regularity were found in a multiresolution framework. Our results show that Antoine filter (7/9) leads to more cancellations of aliasing effect caused in the analysis stage and provides the highest peaksignal to noise ratio (PSNR) on medical images.
