Silk yarn was dyed using three commercial metal complex acid dyes which were suitable for silk. The dyedsamples were aftertreated, using three different commercial systems, namely a syntan, a syntan/metal salts andtannic acid/enzymes processes, in an attempt to improve wash fastness and light fastness properties.Untreated/treated specimens were sequentially washed five times according to ISO CO6 wash tests. It was foundthat the aftertreatments provided an improvement on wash fastness. However, aftertreatment of the dyeing usingtannic acid/enzymes system showed greatest wash fastness improvement toward wash testing.A commercialsyntan improved the wash fastness and the sequential application of metal salts compounds to the syntanneddyeing caused further improvement in wash fastness. Also, the dyed samples (untreated/treated) were washedaccording to ISO CO1 wash tests (Grey scale system for assessing change in colour and staining), it was foundthat the aftertreatment provided an improvement on change in colour and staining. In addition to, reduction instrength (K/S) due to loss of dye during the wash fastness test were determined. The corresponding colorimetricdata revealed that aftertreated with complexing agents and different enzymes improved wash fastness to someextent. Also, light fastness was measured, according to ISO BO2 light test, it was found that the complex agentaftertreatments have no effect on light fastness of metal complex dyeings.
