Energy advantages and disadvantages of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) have been debated during the last few years. The main advantages are low energy consumption and long life while the main disadvantages are low power factor and high harmonic distortion. Since the power utilities and their customers are showing an increased concern about the power quality aspects, there are some mixed feelings towards CFLs. In this regard, one of the crucial points is the effect of harmonic distortion due to the CF lamps usage on electrical apparatus. Hence, in this paper Traditional Incandescent lamp, Tube Fluorescent and CFL are introduced. Transformer de-rating under non sinusoidal condition from standard point of view is investigated. By using power quality analyzer, current harmonic levels of various types of lamps have been measured. Calculation and simulation of transformer loading by using each lamp as transformer load is done and finally effects of CFLs on transformer derating in comparison to the Incandescent and Fluorescent lamps is discussed.
