Free convection heat transfer around a thin plat heater in an air filled square cavity with cold walls has been investigated numerically. The governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method and SIMPLER algorithm. A proper upwind scheme is employed to obtain stabilized solutions for high Rayleigh numbers. Using the developed code, a parametric study is undertaken, and the effects of the Rayleigh number and length and position of the heater on the fluid flow and heat transfer inside the cavity are investigated. It is observed from the results that the rate of heat transfer increases by increasing the length of the heater. Also it is found that for L=0.2, and 0.5, the rate of heat transfer for horizontal positioned heater is higher that to that of vertical positioned heater. For L=0.8 a reverse trend is found.
