چکیده:

In this work, TiCr2 intermetallic was successfully synthesized by calciothermic co-reduction of the TiO2 and Cr2O3 powders. Differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction were used for determining the formation mechanism of this compound. It was found that the molten Ca reacts with Cr2O3 through an exothermic reaction at about 933°C and Cr and CaO were formed. By increasing the temperature, CaTiO3 was formed because of the reaction of CaO and TiO2. As the temperature increased to about 1063°C, Ti was formed because of the Ca reaction with the remained TiO2 and CaTiO3 through an exothermic reaction. Finally, TiCr2 was formed by the mutual diffusion of Ti and Cr elements. The obtained TiCr2 powder contained 1690 ppm oxygen and showed the capability of a hydrogen absorption material after activation
