Reactive Power Compensation in distribution power networks plays a vital role in improving power quality, correcting power factor and maintaining constant distribution voltages. In this paper, a Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) for compensation of reactive power and voltage sags and swells reduction and elimination in distribution system is proposed. However, the quality of DSTATCOM output voltage and current itself, such as injected harmonics and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), are important. So, this paper presents a flying capacitor multicell (FCM) converter based DSTATCOM configuration. The main properties of FCM converter, which cause increase in the number of output voltage levels, are to reach high voltages with lo harmonics without the use of transformers or series-connected, synchronized switching devices and natural self-balancing of flying capacitors voltages. The control method is based on sinusoidal PWM and requires the measurement of the RMS voltage and reactive power at the load point. The proposed DSTATCOM is simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC software and simulation results are presented to validate its effectiveness.
