چکیده:

Comprehensive understanding of flow field around bridge piers is essential to predict the manner of initiation and formation of scour hole around piers. The present study provides a comparison between the results of the experiments on the flow pattern around two-circular piers in tandem and a single pier erected in a rough flat bed. Velocities were measured by an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The contours of the transverse component of mean velocity and turbulence kinetic energy are presented. Streamlines and vectors are used to show the flow features. The resultsshow that the presence of downstream pier changes the flow structure to a greatextent, particularly in the near-wake region. Within the gap between the two piers, a stronger and considerable upflow but a weaker transverse deflection is formed in comparison with that in the single pier. In comparison with the single pier, the values of turbulence kinetic energy show a considerable decrease around the two tandem piers and the high values of turbulence are found near the downstream pier
