The design and manufacture of injection molds is a costly and highly complicated procedure, which requires a high level of empirical knowledge. To support the engineers in these topics a KMS (knowledge management system) called EXINMOLD (EXpert system for INjection MOLDing) was developed in the recent years by the Polymer Competence Center Leoben and the Chair of Polymer Processing of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben (Austria). The structure is built on a typical work flow in the injection molding industry, guiding the user step by step with a checklist. Each step contains knowledge from literature as well as company specific knowhow. The user is bound to complete each step with a useful commentary, which guarantees that the experiences of this project can be used for future projects. In one of the first steps a complex algorithm is used to search for similar part geometries based on specific geometric characteristics. The user gets similar projects from the past and can use the experiences for the solution of new problems. Furthermore, a mold cost calculation tool and several databases like part- and process-related shrinkage data or an interactive injection molding error diagnostic tool are included.
