Dynamic effects on underground structures have often been neglected based on the assumption that their response to earthquake loading is relatively safe as compared to that of surface structures. Nevertheless, several examples of recorded damage to underground structures for which seismic forces were not considered in the original design can be quoted. In this paper, static and dynamic non-linear analysis of a structure is described and applied to a case study. Cohin tunnel in the Ghazvin- Rasht road is analysed in order to assess its structural behaviour and its seismic vulnerability. Obtained results confirm the susceptibility of this type of structure to extensive damage and possibly to collapse. The result provides a global understanding of this tunnel under seismic loading and reveals the weak parts. However, because of the lack of information about the type of current reinforcement of the tunnel, it is recommended that more considerations taken into account because there will be possibility of damage under seismic event. It is believed that the conclusions obtained with respect to the seismic assessment of Cohin tunnel can be extrapolated for the wide variety of surface and underground structures
