In this study, all Iran’s powerplants and their fuel consumption was first reviewed. Then methodology to estimate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission of electricitygeneration sector was explained. At the end, different scenarios for GHG reduction and its effect on Iran’s national grid Emission Factor (EF) were evaluated. The EFcalculation results for the Iranian powerplants show that in 2010 Iran’s national grid EF is 614.8 gCO2/kWh. However, calculated EF for years 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010shows a thought provoking changes which can be explained by powerplantsdevelopment pattern and reliability of renewable energy sources. Despite the development of the hydropower and renewable energy powerplants and their shares inthe generated power, Iran’s grid EF has not changes dramatically which is because of development of the fossil fuel powerplant besides these sort of powerplants. Thismatter evaluated by introducing an alternative scenario in which all fossil fuel powerplants are replaced by equivalent hydropower plants and its effect on thenational grid EF is investigated.
