چکیده:

Fine grained soils are often used in homogeneous dams, and in impervious core sections of zoned embankment dams. There is a strong correlation between incidenceof embankment slope failures and the use of fine grained/highly plastic soil in embankments. Excess pore pressures often develop during rapid construction of finegrainedfill zones, resulting in reduced shear strength and potentially unstable conditions during or shortly following construction.The study includes the results of a set of laboratory tests carried out on sand specimens with the same relative densities and variation in the fines content rangingfrom 0 to 20% and consolidated at mean confining pressure of 100, 200 and 300kPa using static triaxial test apparatus, in order to study the influence of fines fraction andother parameters on the undrained residual shear strength and liquefaction potentialof clayey sand specimens. Also Pore water pressures and liquefaction in clay-sand mixtures are discussed. Test results show that the undrained peak shear strengthdecreases as the fines content increases up to 20% fines content and pore pressure build-up in clayey sands is generally slower than that observed in sands
