In this paper a novel intelligent method is applied to the problem of sizing in a hybrid power system such that demand of residential area is provided, and reliability index is considered as a constraint. In this system, power generators are photovoltaic (PV) /wind turbine, and battery bank is used as an energy storage system. In this system, when the power produced by the wind turbine plus power produced by the PV are more than the demand, the remainder is delivered to the battery bank. In contrast, when the power produced by the wind turbine plus that produced PV are less than the demand, some more batteries are employed and they are fed by the stored energy in battery bank. If by using battery can’t provide on load demand, system will be decided to disconnect loads and their disconnecting is considered in reliability calculations. Our aim is to minimize the total costs of the system such that the demand is met the customer’s required Equivalent Loss Factor (ELF=0.1). Particles Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm has been used to optimize the cost function.
