Convolutional codes are widely used in telecommunication applications to improve the data transmission reliability over noisy channels [1]. In this paper, we investigated a low-power design of Convolutional encoder for wireless communications applications.The behavior of a Convolutional encoder was simulated in simulink and Hspice. In this paper, a ½ rate, 3 constraint length encoder with power saving mechanism for high speed wireless network applications is presented. The shift registers and modulo2 adders (XOR parts) are based on TG units so power dissipation decreased a lot. The circuit has been designed and implemented in 0.18 μm standard CMOS process. Clock frequency is equal to 1 GHz. The test results show that power dissipation reaches ~ 5.9mW.
