The present work mainly deals with photooxidative removal of two textile dyes namely C.I. Basic Red 46 and C. I. Basic Blue 3, in water in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) under UV light illumination (30 W). Decolorization rate of the dyes was not so high when the photolysis was carried out in the absence of H2O2and it was negligible in the absence of UV light. We have studied the influence of the basic operational parameters such as amount of H2O2, irradiation time, initial concentration of dyes and light intensity on the photooxidative decolorization efficiency. The effect of chemical structure of the dyes with different structure and different substitute groups on decolorization efficiency was discussed. The decolorization process was found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetic, and hence the figure-of-merit electrical energy per order (EEo) is appropriate for estimating the electrical energy efficiency and the treatment costs. It was found that the rate of decolorization increased with increasing in H2O2 amount, but the improvement is not obvious above an optimum value.
