Transient overvoltage protection has always been an important part of the electrical design of power systems. Metal-oxide varistor (MOV) has been useful tool to limit the impulse voltage stress in recent years. This device also has some disadvantages. This paper presents a method to alleviate these disadvantages and introduces a Shunt Resistor Array (SRA) controlled by a fuzzy controller to achieve a variable resistor. Appropriate values of resistors and switching strategy to parallel suitable resistors in the resistor array can lead to diverse values of the needed resistor. The main drawback of the proposed circuit is it’s high price because of relatively large number of resistors in SRA. Taguchi’s method was used to minimize the number of shunt resistors in SRA and prepare it to use in protection applications instead of MOV.
