Collagen due to its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and biological characteristics, has extensive applications in tissue-engineered skin substitutes and wound dressings. Collagen nanofibrous scaffolds that are produced via electrospinning, are architecturally similar to the collagen fibrillar structure of the extracellular matrix that leads to enhancement of cellular activities like, cell adhesion, migration and proliferation. In this article, we review the reports on preparation of electrospun nanofibrous collagen scaffolds and composite nanofibrous scaffolds of collagen and biocompatible polymers. Also, characteristics of these biomaterials and cellular behavior on the scaffolds, as wound dressings and skin substitutes are reported.
