The continuous improvement of EAF performance is crucial for the sake of increasing productivity, raising cost effectiveness and rendering a friendly environmental process. RHI supports these targets by providing a diverse range of refractory and process solutions. Chemical energy usage by injection of gaseous based medium like oxygen and natural gas, and solid materials like carbon became one of the typical optimum solutions for process improvement. In that sense, RHI has developed an in-house heat and mass balance model to work out the benefits of investing in chemical injection systems in terms of less electrical energy demands and less C02 emissions. Via C02 emissions trading, it is then obvious that achieving less C02 emissions became a new source for cash flow that could be utilized in further investments. Another optimum solution is a refractory one, it is a bottom purging facility in EAF, commercially know as a directional porosity plug or DPP. The potential of this product is that it enhances the interface reactions between the slag and the bath. Moreover, it aims at achieving better operation parameters in terms of less power consumption and p-on time. Again a benefit in cost and carbon dioxide emissions can obviously be attained. This paper shows the saving potential by raising the chemical energy at the expense of electrical energy via the mentioned model. The benefit of usage of DPP via some results of steel plants is also presented.
