Partial discharge (PD) analysis has become more popular in power transformers monitoring. Nowadays PD measuring devices have been equipped with digital computers which enable them to record measured data. So it is possible to investigate defect type concerning PD activity later by experts or computer based diagnosis software more accurately. The recorded features of PD pulses are different in some conventional acquisition systems. Consequently, different patterns with dissimilar capabilities in PD defect identification could be created and used. In this approach, two mostly used formats for recording data, which are phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and phase resolved pulse sequence (PRPS) data formats and their visual patterns are studied experimentally. For this purpose the PD experiments on oil immersed power transformers and artificial defects are included and the efficiency of different patterns on PD evaluation is compared.
