In order to calculate power production in wind turbines, it is necessary to have a model to describe the effect of rotor loadings on the flow field around the rotor to estimate the wind velocities at the surface of the wind turbine rotor. Actuator Disc Model (ADM) describes energy extraction by a rotor of a wind turbine in the context of a one-dimensional stream tube where the forces acting on the blades are spread over the rotor swept area. ADM is also used to predict wakes in order to quantify the influence of rotor loadings on the total production of wind turbines in a wind farm. This paper describes one dimensional actuator disc theory and the application of this theory on blade designing and wake models. It is restricted to Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine and attempt to illustrate the importance of this theory designing and analyzing of wind turbine blade.
