Cellular manufacturing (CM) is an approach that can be used to enhance both flexibility and efficiency in small-to-medium lot production environment. Cellformation, group layout, and group scheduling are the most important problems in designing a cellular manufacturing system (CMS). These features are interrelated and should bedetermined together to reach an optimal solution. In this study, a new integrated mathematical model is presented for CMSs considering three above problems simultaneously. Such a CMS model has not been proposed before andincorporates several design features including operation sequence, processing time, transferring time, intra-cell layout, inter-cell layout, and group scheduling. The objectivefunction is to minimiul inter-cell and intra-cell material handling costs, tardiness penalties for each part, andmakespan. A numerical example is solved to illustrate the features of the proposed model.
